What happened to pen & paper?

We went out to Parkhurst on the weekend for breakfast to a new place on 4th called Vovo Telo.
This is a franchise owned by famous brands, which also owns Tasha’s, so we thought it would be of the same quality and service……firstly you have to queue (not a surprise living in joburg but part of a normal dining experience).
We finally managed to get a table & waited for our waitress to take the order. I am rather particular with my food, not fussy I just know what I want. After ordering Earl Grey tea, HARD poached eggs on ciabatta (with no butter) and fresh tomato, we first received the wrong order, then finally received very cold soft eggs (which I hate), a plate of butter with a dash of ciabatta, cooked tomatoes and ceylon tea (I will give them credit the tea was hot). When we placed our order I told my partner that the waitress would not remember the order, I pose one question: why is it so uncool for waiting staff to use a pen & paper? I mean I wouldn’t remember complicated orders, I am an accountant, no one minds me using a calculator.

Overall poor service, below average food with a great bakery. My suggestion would be to not try serve so many tables and rather focus on getting the orders right and keeping the food hot.

Karoo Cattle and Land

Recently my other half and I decided to eat out at a new mall that opened north of Randjiesfontein in Midrand. The mall is called “Grey Owl Village” and said restaurant “Karoo Cattle and Land”
As we had not decided at which restaurant to eat yet, we asked if we could peruse the menu. Although classic steak house reminiscent of CTFM, there was also a variety of Karoo cuisine and a quite a decent vegetarian menu also. So we decided to eat there…

This is where it get’s interesting….the manager approached us and mentioned that because we chose his restaurant, our meal would be on him. The only thing we had to pay for was our drinks. At first I thought he was joking…then I realised that he was being quite serious.

“Who said that there is no such thing as a free meal?”

Any way’s..:

The short version…

Decor: 9/10
Food Quality: 10/10 (To die for is their home made Portuguese Chilli and Paprika sauce….)
Service: 10/10 (Ice in the ash-tray’s, observant but not intrusive waiters)
Comfort: 10/10(No expense was spared on the chairs and furniture)
Vibe: 9/10 (Semi formal in a good way)
Prices: Similar to CTFM…A little more expensive than usual…but you should see the size of the meals! I for one did not finish my steak. Plus, the salad buffet is complimentary.

By the time we each had a 3 course meal and got the bill…not even our starters and desert was charged! I sort of felt bad and asked if I at least could pay for the starters and dessert…Nope! He was adamant! He only asked us to remember that our waiter worked on a tip basis and kindly suggested that we don’t tip him according to the drinks bill alone, and to give word of mouth!

Sooo…just as we were spoiled, we paid it forward and gave our waiter a 100% tip that almost made him suspicious as we were when we were told that our meal was free!

Silver Orange Bistro

For valentine’s day this year, my wife booked us a table at a restaurant that we had not heard before, but their website looked nice and we are always keen to try new places. Silver Orange Bistro is located just on the other side of the Northern Ridge of Hartbeesport dam (About 200 meters from the 4 ways stop).

Silver Orange Bistro has a country style and is situated on a family owned farm. The bistro is a small thatched house that seats between 60 – 70 people in three separate rooms. There is also a small patio outside which hosts a few tables, and one could always book a table in the garden under an umbrella if the weather was nice.

The Silver Orange Bistro has won many awards over the last few years, including ‘Top 100 Restaurants Dine’ and ‘Diners Club Gold Award’ just to mention 2 of their 5 accolades since their establishment in 2004.

The food is fantastic, 10 out of 10, and the presentation deserves a score higher than 10!
I would have to say that this is most definitely in the top 5 restaurants I have ever been to, worldwide!

Prices are very reasonable, and out of my top 5 restaurants, this is the cheapest. The total bill for my wife and I, which included 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 desert, 1 bottle of wine and 4 other drinks including Don Pedro’s was just over R500

Then again, don’t take my word for it, try it out for yourself .
